Highbury Triangle

The Kainga Ora development at Highbury Triangle in Avondale is part of the larger ‘Unlock Avondale’ project, aimed at creating new high quality residential neighbourhoods.  Comprising 236 units across five buildings between six and eight storeys high, the majority of the housing is for senior living facilities, with one building reserved for private tenants.

The architectural vision for Highbury Triangle used different coloured bricks as a common element to produce an overall cohesive look that was also individual, creating a sense of belonging for tenants of a specific building.  Contrasting with the brick, aluminium elements are used to articulate the elevations and add definition for scale.  This includes the use of perforated aluminium sunshades to control thermal gain and support a sustainable approach to heating and cooling.

The awning shades incorporated into the design were finished in either an ironsand powder coat or white warm pearl colour.  Made from 3mm aluminium, each features a standard dapple pattern with an aluminium support frame (supplied and installed by us).  The aluminium support strut was mechanically fastened to brackets, enabling the sunshades to be installed after the bricks.  This was our recommended change from the initial design, which used welding and would have required installation prior to brick installation, complicating the project sequencing.

Highbury Triangle is a model medium density neighbourhood development.  A crafted blend of functionality and aesthetics, it meets the living needs of seniors and also the critical need for creating beautiful spaces that can foster a sense of community.  The largest Kainga Ora development to date is equally impressive in scale as it is in detail.  Some of which will shine through the windows with dappled light dancing in the interior spaces courtesy of those Insol sunshades.
